Entry #2 - A.I.: Friend or Foe?
A.I.: FRIEND OR FOE?
Hello World
It seems like we can't go anywhere today without some sort of reminder of the ever-rapid growth and integration of artificial intelligence in our day-to-day lives. Whether it's our favorite search engine trying to persuade us to use their "revolutionary" A.I., or "Siri" wanting us to order a pizza by pressing a button and yelling "I WANT PIZZA" at our square pieces of metal, glass, and plastic. And no matter how we feel about it, it seems like artificial intelligence will have more and more of an impact and say-so on our day-to-day lives the more time passes. But with every revolutionary technology, we have to proceed cautiously because the faster we rush a powerful technology such as artificial intelligence into our everyday lives, the less we will be prepared for the inevitable downfalls of said technology.
The scariest story I've heard about artificial intelligence actually took place in Scottsdale, Arizona when a scammer called an unsuspecting mother and demanded money when they claimed to have kidnapped her daughter who was away on a school trip. The mother said she was at first skeptical, but her skepticism quickly turned to panic when the scammers put her "daughter" on the phone. It was an indistinguishable recording of her daughter's voice; created with advanced artificial intelligence. The mother said she was absolutely certain the voice she was hearing was her daughter. The pitch, tone, cadence, emotion; everything was her daughter. I get chills every time I think about this, and as a father of young children, this story was one of my worst nightmares lived out by a stranger. The mother ended up getting in contact with her daughter and figuring out that she was victim of a sadistic scam attempt, and thankfully her daughter was just fine.
So next time we praise the convenience of AI, or some cool Kanye West and Drake song that was never really recorded but sounds exactly like them thanks to AI, keep in mind that with every positive there is usually a negative. And if we are not careful, we could end up not being as lucky as the lady in that story , and fall pray to a vicious AI scam or worse...ROBOTS. Okay, I'm only joking about the robots....kind of.
Thanks for stopping by.

It is amazing how far AI has come. It has a lot more potential to grow as well. I like your view on AI and how you explained it.
ReplyDeleteWith how far AI is going to develop do you believe that these scams will become more and more frequent or do you believe that we will develop someway to verify if it’s the person were talking to who it is if it’s a machine or human? And with the rise of AI will things be automated like texts or calls?
ReplyDeleteAI is going a long way, especially in the "tech" direction the world is shifting to. It is scary also because if it keeps getting improved, it will take over most of the things humans do.
