Entry #8 - Will A.I. Take Your Job?

 Will A.I. Take Your Job?

Hello World,

If you've read anything on my blog over the past few months, you probably have seen me mention Artificial Intelligence a time or three. So, in the spirit of continuation, I will once again be discussing A.I. More specifically, A.I. and its current and future role in the American workforce.

It's hard to deny the potential of A.I. and it's ability to assist us in the American workforce. Whether it be smarter airplanes for quicker/safer/more efficient travel, a medical robot that uses A.I. to perform surgery, or even a McDonald's Kiosk that will take the customer's order. A.I. is here and it has already impacted us all more than we probably realize. But is there a point in which A.I. could become too powerful, so much that it eventually renders each and every one of us useless? Is there a future in which corporations bypass human intelligence for artificial intelligence? Or should we all take off our tin foil hats? I think it's probably a little bit of both.

As we've seen in recent years, A.I. is developing at an astronomically fast pace and it has shown no signs of slowing down. We all know the power of the dollar, and Corporate America's infatuation with milking every red cent from each dollar, so I could definitely see a not-so-distant future America where a majority of "low skill" (I hate that terminology) jobs institute full A.I. workforces over human workers. We've already seen this happen in small samples as I mentioned earlier, where most McDonald's now have only one register that is operated by a human. Everything else is Kiosks that use A.I. to take your order and even upsell you. Supermarkets have been doing this for some time now, with the absence of upselling obviously, but it's hard not to notice the lack of registers operated by humans at our local supermarkets.

So, what can we do to prevent such a hopeless future? Do we all equip ourselves with weapons and launch an all out attack on the computers/A.I.? Well, of course not. But that doesn't mean we have to sit idle, either. I think all of us should pay attention, research, and learn as much as possible about A.I. and it's role in our everyday lives.

Thanks for reading, World.

  1. I think about this often. There will always be jobs that AI can't do, but they can still take over a majority of people's jobs. I wonder if it would get to a point where citizens come forward into pressing this issue to get their jobs back.

  2. I think this was really interesting to read because I have personally wondered if my career path could soon be done by just a machine.

  3. I like your views on this. I feel like it can turn out to be useful like how internet have been but I also feel like it can take a lot of opportunities away from others. -Jacob R

  4. I really enjoyed reading your blog about AI! It is a great discussion topic that everybody has a different point of view on. AI kind of scares me only because of how much it is capable of and what it can bring in the future.
